Sacramento Graduation Photo Sessions
A local photographer's planning guide to graduation photos at CSUS, UC Davis, and Sac State — where to shoot, when to book, what to bring, and how to get the cap-and-gown portraits your family will frame for years.

A cap-and-gown session at Sacramento State during the last hour of spring light.
Sacramento graduation photos are best shot on your own campus during golden hour, 4 to 6 weeks before or after commencement, with a local photographer who already knows the best corners of Sac State, UC Davis, Sierra College, or wherever you earned your degree. That combination — real campus, good light, and a photographer who has shot there before — is what separates a portrait session you'll actually print from a phone dump that lives in a camera roll.
As a Sacramento photographer who shoots graduation portraits every spring and fall, I get the same planning questions from seniors and their parents: when to book, which campus spots actually look good on camera, whether permits are needed, what to wear under the gown, and how to fit a session around the chaos of finals week.
This guide answers all of it — campus by campus — with the timing, locations, pricing, and prep details I share with my own graduation clients. Whether you're walking at Sac State, UC Davis, CRC, ARC, Sierra College, or one of the smaller regional schools, the planning process is the same.
Sacramento graduation photo planning at a glance
- ●Book 4 to 6 weeks ahead for spring sessions, 2 to 4 weeks for fall or winter.
- ●Shoot at golden hour — the 60 to 90 minutes before sunset. In May, that's roughly 6:30 to 7:45 PM.
- ●Typical cost: $250 to $450 for a mid-range Sacramento session with 40 to 60 edited images.
- ●No permits required for personal sessions at Sac State, UC Davis, or community colleges. Commercial shoots are the exception.
- ●Bring two outfits — one under your gown, one casual for non-regalia shots. Iron the gown the night before.
- ●Session length: 60 to 90 minutes total, covering 2 to 3 locations on your campus of choice.
Sacramento State (CSUS) graduation photo spots
Sac State is the biggest graduation photo destination in the region — more than 8,000 degrees awarded each year, according to Sacramento State's Office of Institutional Research. A csus graduation photographer who shoots here regularly already knows which spots photograph well in spring light and which ones turn into crowded backdrops the week of commencement.
After shooting dozens of sessions at Sac State, these are the campus locations I return to every season:
- ●The Library Quad. The steps and columns in front of the University Library are the signature Sac State backdrop. Morning or late afternoon avoids harsh midday shadows from the building.
- ●Guy West Bridge. The suspension footbridge over the American River is a Sac State icon. Best shot with late-day light coming from the west — the gown fabric picks up a warm glow.
- ●Redwood Grove & Alumni Grove. Tall trees filter the afternoon sun into clean, even light. Great for families who want a less architectural look.
- ●The University Union. Modern glass and clean lines. Works well for photojournalistic “walking through campus” shots between the main portraits.
- ●Capistrano Hall & the Music Wing. Underrated — the brick exteriors and mature landscaping give the image some texture without competing with the graduate.
Schedule your Sac State session for a weekend at least two weeks before or after commencement week. Campus is packed during finals and the week of the ceremony, and parking near Lot 1 and Lot 7 turns into a headache. A Saturday evening three weeks early gives you uncrowded backgrounds and easy parking.
Parking for Sac State sessions is easiest at Lot 1 off State University Drive or Lot 7 off J Street. You can also pick me up from the greater Sacramento area and drive in together — I do this for families coming from out of town for commencement weekend.
UC Davis graduation photo locations
UC Davis is 15 miles west of Sacramento and awards around 9,500 degrees annually across its undergraduate and graduate programs, per the UC Davis Office of the University Registrar. For uc davis graduation photos, the campus gives you more variety than Sac State — agricultural fields, mature arboretum paths, brick classical buildings, and modern architecture all within a short walk.
My most-used UC Davis spots for cap-and-gown sessions:
- ●Shields Library. The main library entrance is the most recognizable academic backdrop on campus. Shoot it in late afternoon when the west-facing entrance catches warm light.
- ●The UC Davis Arboretum. A three-mile ribbon of planted gardens along Putah Creek. The redwood grove and the Australian Collection give you nature-forward portraits without leaving campus. Best in spring when the wisteria and roses are blooming.
- ●The Memorial Union Quad. Wide open grass, the MU building, and a clear sky backdrop. Works for groups and individual portraits alike.
- ●The Egghead sculptures. The Robert Arneson sculptures scattered around campus are an inside joke every UC Davis grad recognizes. Worth including one shot with “Bookhead” by Shields or “See No Evil/Hear No Evil” near King Hall.
- ●Mrak Hall & the Silo. Great for a more architectural, grown-up look. Mrak's formal entrance contrasts nicely with the farmland sightlines just off Hutchison Drive.
If you studied in a specific school — Plant Sciences, the School of Veterinary Medicine, the Graduate School of Management — we'll work that building into the session too. It's the details that make the images feel like yours instead of generic campus stock.
Sierra College, CRC, ARC & other local schools
Not every Sacramento graduate walks at Sac State or UC Davis. The Los Rios Community College District graduates about 8,700 students across its four colleges each year, according to district reporting — and Sierra College in Rocklin adds thousands more. These campuses often photograph better than people expect:
- ●Sierra College (Rocklin). Oak-studded foothills, the fountain plaza near the Administration Building, and the science building courtyard. Fewer crowds than the 4-year schools.
- ●American River College (Sacramento). The main quad, the library breezeway, and the oak-lined walkway to the Student Center. Parking is free on weekends.
- ●Cosumnes River College (Elk Grove). The modern central plaza and the reflecting pond make CRC one of the most underrated photo campuses in the region.
- ●Sacramento City College. Historic 1916 architecture, mature trees, and the front lawn steps. The oldest campus in the Los Rios system and it shows — in a good way.
- ●Folsom Lake College. Rolling hills, the harris center, and views out toward the foothills. Works especially well for golden-hour sessions in late spring.
If your campus isn't on this list, send me a message — chances are I've either shot there or scouted it for another session. I cover Sacramento, Elk Grove, Roseville, Folsom, Davis, Rocklin, and the surrounding areas for senior portraits and graduation sessions year-round.
When to book — Sacramento graduation demand
Booking demand for Sacramento graduation photographers is not evenly spread across the year. Based on my own booking calendar over the past three spring seasons, here is when inquiries spike — and when calendars close.

Cap and gown photos in Sacramento — what to bring
Cap and gown photos sacramento sessions are easier to prep for than family sessions because the regalia does most of the styling work. But the details under and around the gown are where most graduates get it wrong.
- Iron or steam the gown. Wrinkles are the #1 issue I see on graduation day — they show up worse on camera than in person.
- Wear a light, solid top underneath. White or cream works best. It keeps the eye on your face instead of a weird collar peeking out.
- Bring one casual outfit change. Neutral tones or soft colors that complement campus greenery. Think earth tones, cream, sage, dusty rose.
- Pack your tassel, honor cords, and stoles. These are the small details families love seeing in framed prints later.
- Hair and makeup ready to go. Arrive at the shoot location fully ready — campus bathrooms are not where you want to be doing touch-ups.
- Comfortable backup shoes. Wear heels or dress shoes for the portraits, but bring sneakers for the walking between spots.
- One meaningful prop. A diploma, a framed degree, or the acceptance letter from four years ago. Just one — not a prop suitcase.

See graduation packagesA typical Sacramento graduation session timeline
Here's how a typical 75-minute session flows for a Sac State or UC Davis graduate. Use this as a template when you're planning your own day:
Arrive at campus
Park, meet the photographer at the agreed spot, do a quick gown check.
Location 1 — signature campus spot
Library steps, Guy West Bridge, or Shields. 15 to 20 minutes of cap-and-gown portraits.
Walking shots + detail shots
Tassel, diploma, honor cords. These become the favorite printed images later.
Location 2 — natural / second look
Arboretum, redwood grove, or oak walkway. Outfit change for 10 to 15 minutes of casual portraits.
Family group shots
Parents, siblings, and anyone who showed up. 10 to 15 minutes handles the whole group.
Wrap and walk off
Final cap-toss if requested, quick review of the location, and you're done. Gallery delivered in 2 to 3 weeks.
If you want a longer session — say, Sac State plus a second location in East Sac or Old Sacramento — add 30 to 45 minutes and we can stretch to two full locations plus a break between them.
Common Sacramento graduation photo mistakes
- ✕Booking your session for commencement week itself. Campuses are chaotic, crowds are everywhere, and parking is a nightmare. Shoot 1 to 3 weeks before or after.
- ✕Midday shoots under harsh sun. Noon light on a Sacramento May day produces raccoon eyes and blown-out gowns. Morning or evening light is the answer.
- ✕Hiring a photographer who has never shot your campus. Location knowledge is half the value of hiring a local. Ask which spots they use at Sac State or UCD before booking.
- ✕Only shooting on campus. The best graduation galleries mix campus shots with locations that mean something to the graduate — a favorite Midtown cafe, the river, Old Sacramento. Don't limit yourself.
- ✕Forgetting to coordinate with family. If parents or siblings want to be in a few shots, give them the memo on outfits at least a week ahead. See my family prep guide if younger siblings are joining.
- ✕Waiting until after graduation to start looking. By commencement week, every experienced Sacramento photographer is fully booked. Spring slots need to close in February or early March.
Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should I book Sacramento graduation photos?
Book 4 to 6 weeks in advance for spring sessions and 2 to 4 weeks for fall or winter. Peak Sacramento graduation dates in May and June fill up fastest — experienced photographers often close their calendars by mid-March. If you want weekend golden-hour slots at Sac State or UC Davis, reach out as soon as your ceremony date is confirmed.
Can I take graduation photos at CSUS without a permit?
Yes. Sacramento State allows personal graduation portrait sessions on campus without a permit for individuals and small family groups. Commercial photography with lighting setups or large crews may require coordination with campus police, but standard cap-and-gown sessions with a photographer and a few family members don't. Just avoid blocking walkways and university events.
Do I need a permit for UC Davis graduation photos?
No permit is required for personal graduation photo sessions at UC Davis. The UC Davis Arboretum, Shields Library, and the Memorial Union are all accessible to visitors. Permits are only needed for commercial productions, drone use, or restricted locations. Most cap-and-gown sessions happen without any paperwork at all.
What should I wear for cap and gown photos in Sacramento?
Wear something simple and solid-colored under your gown — a white or light top works best. Bring one casual outfit change in neutral tones or soft colors that complement campus greenery. Avoid loud patterns, logos, and clashing colors. Comfortable shoes matter too — sessions involve walking between campus locations.
When is the best time of day for graduation photos at Sacramento campuses?
Golden hour — the 60 to 90 minutes before sunset — is the best time for graduation photos at any Sacramento campus. In spring (April through June), that means starting around 6:30 to 7:30 PM. The warm, low-angle light flatters skin tones and creates soft shadows against campus architecture. Morning light is a solid backup.
How long does a Sacramento graduation photo session take?
A typical Sacramento graduation session runs 45 to 60 minutes of shooting, plus 15 minutes for outfit changes and location moves. Budget 90 minutes total if you're visiting two campus locations or want multiple outfit looks. Sessions feel unhurried at this length — enough for cap and gown, a casual look, and a few family group shots.
