WHY FOLSOM

Why Folsom is perfect for your session

Folsom offers something most Sacramento-area locations cannot: genuine waterfront photography combined with historic small-town character. Folsom Lake's shoreline gives you dramatic water-meets-granite backdrops, while Sutter Street's Historic District — with its Gold Rush-era facades and tree-lined sidewalks — feels like stepping into another era.

The Johnny Cash Trail bridge is an increasingly popular spot for portraits, and for good reason. The modern architecture against the natural canyon creates strong leading lines and visual contrast. Rainbow Bridge, spanning the American River gorge, offers elevated views that add scale and drama to couples and senior sessions.

What I love about shooting in Folsom is the variety within a tight radius. You can start lakeside, move to the historic district, and finish on a trail — three completely different looks without driving more than ten minutes between spots.

Best times to shoot

Folsom Lake looks best in spring (full water levels) and fall (warm tones on surrounding hillsides). Summer sessions should be scheduled for the last 90 minutes before sunset — the lake reflects golden light beautifully. Sutter Street works year-round, especially on weekday evenings when foot traffic thins out.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Photography in Folsom

Where should we take photos in Folsom?

Folsom Lake's shoreline provides dramatic water-and-hill backdrops — especially at sunset when the lake turns mirror-still and reflects the colors of the sky. The Historic District on Sutter Street is perfect for urban charm with Gold Rush character: brick facades, tree-lined sidewalks, and warm storefront light. The Johnny Cash Trail bridge offers modern architectural lines against natural canyon scenery for something more editorial.

When is the best time for photos at Folsom Lake?

Early evening is ideal — when Folsom Lake catches the last of the sunset light and the historic district glows warm. Spring wildflowers bloom on the hillsides around the lake from March through April. Fall adds golden and amber oaks around the shoreline. Summer mornings work well before the afternoon heat, and the lake level is typically higher in spring for better waterline photography.

How far is Folsom from Sacramento?

Folsom is about 25 miles east of Sacramento, typically 30–40 minutes via US-50. Angie shoots in Folsom regularly and does not charge a travel fee for sessions here.
