Family Sessions in Folsom, CA — Captured By Angie
About This Session

Family photography in Folsom

Family photography in Folsom works best when it feels like a regular afternoon — just with someone capturing the good parts. Open spaces near Folsom Lake, Sutter Street's Historic District, and the Johnny Cash Trail give kids room to move while oak-studded hillsides, lake shorelines, and the American River Parkway provide a naturally beautiful setting. These sessions are relaxed, playful, and designed to reflect your family as you actually are. Angie schedules shoots during early evening when Folsom Lake reflects sunset colors and the historic district glows warm, when the light across Sacramento County is warm enough to flatter every skin tone. Arrive at free street parking along Sutter Street and paid lots at Folsom Lake State Recreation Area, and the session flows from there — 45-60 minutes of candid moments mixed with a handful of guided frames that look great printed large. Wardrobe tip: coordinate around a soft color palette rather than matching. It photographs better and feels less forced. After the session, restaurants and ice cream shops on Sutter Street for a post-session wind-down make a natural wind-down for the whole family.

What is family sessions?

Family photography is an on-location portrait session designed to document the authentic connections within a family — candid interactions, playful moments, and genuine expressions rather than stiff, posed group shots. Captured By Angie offers 45-60 minute family sessions at parks, open fields, and private homes throughout Sacramento and Northern California, including popular locations like William Land Park, the American River Parkway, and McKinley Park. Sessions accommodate families of all sizes, from couples with newborns to multigenerational groups of twenty or more. A natural mix of candid and gently guided shots ensures both real moments and wall-worthy portraits in every gallery. Deliverables include 30-50 individually edited images with a 2-3 week turnaround, delivered through a private online gallery. Photographer Angie Shvaya coordinates wardrobe palettes and timing around golden hour to produce warm, natural-light images that reflect how each family actually lives and loves. Fall sessions from October through November are the most popular booking window.

Common Questions

Family Sessions FAQ

That is completely normal and honestly some of my favorite images come from it. I never force kids to sit still and smile. We play games, explore, and let them do their thing. The result is photos that actually look like your family — not stiff, staged portraits where everyone looks uncomfortable.

Coordinate, don't match. Stick to a color palette — neutrals, earth tones, and soft colors photograph beautifully in Sacramento's natural light. Avoid large logos and neon. I send a detailed style guide after booking with specific recommendations based on your session location and time of year.

Fall is the most popular — October and November give you golden light and gorgeous foliage at places like William Land Park and the American River Parkway. But spring is equally beautiful, and summer sessions work if we shoot in the hour before sunset. Sacramento's mild winters are underrated for photos too.

Of course. I love multigenerational sessions. We will start with the full group, then break into smaller combinations — grandparents with grandkids, siblings together, your immediate family. It adds about 15 minutes to the session, and those images become some of the most treasured ones in the gallery.

Local Info

About photography in Folsom

Folsom Lake's shoreline provides dramatic water-and-hill backdrops — especially at sunset when the lake turns mirror-still and reflects the colors of the sky. The Historic District on Sutter Street is perfect for urban charm with Gold Rush character: brick facades, tree-lined sidewalks, and warm storefront light. The Johnny Cash Trail bridge offers modern architectural lines against natural canyon scenery for something more editorial.

Early evening is ideal — when Folsom Lake catches the last of the sunset light and the historic district glows warm. Spring wildflowers bloom on the hillsides around the lake from March through April. Fall adds golden and amber oaks around the shoreline. Summer mornings work well before the afternoon heat, and the lake level is typically higher in spring for better waterline photography.

Folsom is about 25 miles east of Sacramento, typically 30–40 minutes via US-50. Angie shoots in Folsom regularly and does not charge a travel fee for sessions here.
