Family Sessions in Auburn, CA — Captured By Angie
About This Session

Family photography in Auburn

What makes Auburn special for family photography is the combination of Gold Country heritage with serious outdoor recreation access and genuinely beautiful outdoor spaces. Sessions near Old Town Auburn, the American River confluence, and Foresthill Bridge let families spread out, and canyon overlooks, pine-oak woodlands, and rushing river corridors add a layered, natural backdrop without requiring a drive to a distant location. Angie's approach is simple: show up during the golden hour when canyon walls warm up and Old Town's brick facades catch deep amber light, let the kids lead, and she will capture the moments that matter. Parking at free public lots in Old Town Auburn and trailhead parking near the confluence keeps logistics easy, and the session itself runs 45-60 minutes — long enough for variety, short enough to keep everyone happy. Multigenerational groups are welcome; Angie weaves in smaller combination shots throughout so grandparents, siblings, and individual families all get their own frames. The gallery of 30-50 images arrives in 2-3 weeks. Many Auburn families plan a stop at Old Town Auburn's restaurants and wine tasting rooms within walking distance of session locations as part of the evening.

What is family sessions?

Family photography is an on-location portrait session designed to document the authentic connections within a family — candid interactions, playful moments, and genuine expressions rather than stiff, posed group shots. Captured By Angie offers 45-60 minute family sessions at parks, open fields, and private homes throughout Sacramento and Northern California, including popular locations like William Land Park, the American River Parkway, and McKinley Park. Sessions accommodate families of all sizes, from couples with newborns to multigenerational groups of twenty or more. A natural mix of candid and gently guided shots ensures both real moments and wall-worthy portraits in every gallery. Deliverables include 30-50 individually edited images with a 2-3 week turnaround, delivered through a private online gallery. Photographer Angie Shvaya coordinates wardrobe palettes and timing around golden hour to produce warm, natural-light images that reflect how each family actually lives and loves. Fall sessions from October through November are the most popular booking window.

Common Questions

Family Sessions FAQ

That is completely normal and honestly some of my favorite images come from it. I never force kids to sit still and smile. We play games, explore, and let them do their thing. The result is photos that actually look like your family — not stiff, staged portraits where everyone looks uncomfortable.

Coordinate, don't match. Stick to a color palette — neutrals, earth tones, and soft colors photograph beautifully in Sacramento's natural light. Avoid large logos and neon. I send a detailed style guide after booking with specific recommendations based on your session location and time of year.

Fall is the most popular — October and November give you golden light and gorgeous foliage at places like William Land Park and the American River Parkway. But spring is equally beautiful, and summer sessions work if we shoot in the hour before sunset. Sacramento's mild winters are underrated for photos too.

Of course. I love multigenerational sessions. We will start with the full group, then break into smaller combinations — grandparents with grandkids, siblings together, your immediate family. It adds about 15 minutes to the session, and those images become some of the most treasured ones in the gallery.

Local Info

About photography in Auburn

Old Town Auburn is the standout location — brick facades on Lincoln Way and Court Street, covered sidewalks, and Gold Rush-era architecture create a backdrop with real character. The American River canyon confluence below Old Town offers dramatic canyon walls and rushing water for adventurous sessions. Foresthill Bridge looms overhead and makes a striking environmental element. Canyon overlooks at sunset light up the foothill terrain with warm amber tones.

Spring and fall are the most photogenic seasons. Spring (March–May) brings green canyon slopes and flowing water at the river confluence. Fall turns Old Town's surrounding oaks golden from October through November. The canyon light during golden hour is exceptional — canyon walls warm up and the pine-oak woodland goes fully amber. Summer mornings work well in the canyon before the heat builds.

Auburn is about 35 miles northeast of Sacramento, typically 40–50 minutes via Interstate 80. Angie covers Auburn and the Placer County foothills and will confirm travel details when you inquire about a session here.
