Family Sessions in Davis, CA — Captured By Angie
About This Session

Family photography in Davis

Davis families often tell Angie they were nervous about the session — and then ask to rebook before the gallery is even delivered. That is because these sessions are designed around how families actually work, not a stiff lineup in front of a backdrop. Locations near the UC Davis Arboretum, downtown murals, and the campus quad offer tree-canopied bike paths, sunflower fields, and Putah Creek that keep the energy light and the kids engaged. Sessions run during late afternoon when the Arboretum's tree canopy creates soft, filtered light perfect for portraits when Yolo County light is warm and forgiving. Meet at campus visitor parking and free spots on residential streets near the Arboretum, spend 45-60 minutes being yourselves, and let Angie handle the rest. The delivered gallery of 30-50 edited images captures real expressions — the held hands, the belly laughs, the quiet looks between parents. Finish the evening at downtown Davis coffee shops and the farmers market for a laid-back pre-session vibe and make it a full family outing.

What is family sessions?

Family photography is an on-location portrait session designed to document the authentic connections within a family — candid interactions, playful moments, and genuine expressions rather than stiff, posed group shots. Captured By Angie offers 45-60 minute family sessions at parks, open fields, and private homes throughout Sacramento and Northern California, including popular locations like William Land Park, the American River Parkway, and McKinley Park. Sessions accommodate families of all sizes, from couples with newborns to multigenerational groups of twenty or more. A natural mix of candid and gently guided shots ensures both real moments and wall-worthy portraits in every gallery. Deliverables include 30-50 individually edited images with a 2-3 week turnaround, delivered through a private online gallery. Photographer Angie Shvaya coordinates wardrobe palettes and timing around golden hour to produce warm, natural-light images that reflect how each family actually lives and loves. Fall sessions from October through November are the most popular booking window.

Common Questions

Family Sessions FAQ

That is completely normal and honestly some of my favorite images come from it. I never force kids to sit still and smile. We play games, explore, and let them do their thing. The result is photos that actually look like your family — not stiff, staged portraits where everyone looks uncomfortable.

Coordinate, don't match. Stick to a color palette — neutrals, earth tones, and soft colors photograph beautifully in Sacramento's natural light. Avoid large logos and neon. I send a detailed style guide after booking with specific recommendations based on your session location and time of year.

Fall is the most popular — October and November give you golden light and gorgeous foliage at places like William Land Park and the American River Parkway. But spring is equally beautiful, and summer sessions work if we shoot in the hour before sunset. Sacramento's mild winters are underrated for photos too.

Of course. I love multigenerational sessions. We will start with the full group, then break into smaller combinations — grandparents with grandkids, siblings together, your immediate family. It adds about 15 minutes to the session, and those images become some of the most treasured ones in the gallery.

Local Info

About photography in Davis

The UC Davis Arboretum is the standout location — tree-canopied pathways along Putah Creek create soft, dappled light that works beautifully for portraits at almost any time of day. The campus quad and library lawn are popular for graduation sessions with UC Davis students. Downtown Davis murals add color and character for more urban editorial looks. The surrounding farmland offers wide-open sunset skies.

Spring is peak season in Davis — the Arboretum is in full bloom from late February through April with flowering trees and green pathways. Fall is excellent too, when the tree canopy turns amber along Putah Creek. Summer evenings work well for sunset sessions in the open farmland east of campus. Graduation season in May and June draws many UC Davis portrait bookings.

Davis is about 15 miles west of Sacramento, typically 20–25 minutes via Interstate 80. Angie regularly shoots at UC Davis for graduation portraits and does not charge a travel fee for this area.
