Family photography in Sacramento
Family sessions in Sacramento lean into what makes your crew unique — the inside jokes, the toddler who won't sit still, the quiet moments between the chaos. Locations near the Capitol building, Tower Bridge, and Old Sacramento waterfront offer Midtown murals, Land Park gardens, and the Sacramento River that feel natural and lived-in, not staged. Angie's documentary approach means you get to be yourselves while she captures the real stuff. Sessions run 45-60 minutes, timed around the hour before sunset when warm light floods the Capitol grounds and Tower Bridge glows gold when the light is warm and soft. Getting there is easy — street parking and public lots near Capitol Mall and Old Sacramento puts families right at the session location. Kids are free to run, explore, and be messy. That is where the best images come from. When the session wraps, most families head to coffee shops and restaurants in Midtown for a pre-session meetup or post-session celebration for dinner or a treat, turning the whole thing into a family outing worth remembering.
What is family sessions?
Family photography is an on-location portrait session designed to document the authentic connections within a family — candid interactions, playful moments, and genuine expressions rather than stiff, posed group shots. Captured By Angie offers 45-60 minute family sessions at parks, open fields, and private homes throughout Sacramento and Northern California, including popular locations like William Land Park, the American River Parkway, and McKinley Park. Sessions accommodate families of all sizes, from couples with newborns to multigenerational groups of twenty or more. A natural mix of candid and gently guided shots ensures both real moments and wall-worthy portraits in every gallery. Deliverables include 30-50 individually edited images with a 2-3 week turnaround, delivered through a private online gallery. Photographer Angie Shvaya coordinates wardrobe palettes and timing around golden hour to produce warm, natural-light images that reflect how each family actually lives and loves. Fall sessions from October through November are the most popular booking window.

Family Sessions FAQ
That is completely normal and honestly some of my favorite images come from it. I never force kids to sit still and smile. We play games, explore, and let them do their thing. The result is photos that actually look like your family — not stiff, staged portraits where everyone looks uncomfortable.
Coordinate, don't match. Stick to a color palette — neutrals, earth tones, and soft colors photograph beautifully in Sacramento's natural light. Avoid large logos and neon. I send a detailed style guide after booking with specific recommendations based on your session location and time of year.
Fall is the most popular — October and November give you golden light and gorgeous foliage at places like William Land Park and the American River Parkway. But spring is equally beautiful, and summer sessions work if we shoot in the hour before sunset. Sacramento's mild winters are underrated for photos too.
Of course. I love multigenerational sessions. We will start with the full group, then break into smaller combinations — grandparents with grandkids, siblings together, your immediate family. It adds about 15 minutes to the session, and those images become some of the most treasured ones in the gallery.
About photography in Sacramento
The Capitol building and Tower Bridge are iconic for dramatic backdrops. Midtown's mural alleys catch beautiful reflected light in the afternoon. Land Park and the Sacramento River trail offer natural, green settings year-round. For golden hour, the waterfront near Old Sacramento faces west and glows at sunset — it's one of the most reliable spots in the city for warm, cinematic portraits.
Sacramento photographs well year-round. Spring (March–May) brings blooming trees and warm light along the American River Parkway and Capitol Park. Fall (October–November) offers golden foliage at Land Park and along the river. Summer works if you shoot during the golden hour window — the hour before sunset — to avoid harsh midday heat. Winter light is soft and underrated.
Most locations are centrally accessible. Capitol Mall, Old Sacramento, and Tower Bridge all have nearby public parking lots off 3rd Street and Front Street. Land Park offers free street parking along Freeport Boulevard. Midtown is best reached via street parking near 19th and 20th streets. Angie will share exact meeting point details after booking.
