American River College Graduation Photos: Campus Spots, Timing & Cost

Where to shoot cap and gown photos at ARC, the best time of day for each spot, how to plan around May commencement at Beaver Stadium, and what a session costs.

Take American River College graduation photos under the campus oaks, at the library entrance and outside Beaver Stadium, where commencement is held. Book a weekday morning or the last hour before sunset, two to four weeks before the May ceremony. Sessions start at $500+; see the graduation photo cost guide.

I'm a Sacramento graduation photographer working in natural light, on location. ARC sits on College Oak Drive in northeast Sacramento County, a short drive from Carmichael, so this guide also covers the Carmichael graduation photo spots that pair well with a campus session. If you are finishing at another Los Rios college, see my guides to Cosumnes River College, Folsom Lake College, and Sacramento City College.

The Spots

Where should you take ARC graduation photos?

  1. 01

    The campus oaks

Best timeLate afternoon, when the canopy throws open shade

The oak is ARC's official symbol, and it is on the campus seal. The college's history page says that by the 1958 dedication, eight building complexes had gone up among the native oaks on the old Cameron Ranch site. That makes a big oak the most ARC-specific backdrop you can stand under. Look for a wide trunk with open ground in front and no parked cars behind it. The shade under a full canopy is even and easy on faces, which helps when the sun is still high.

  2. 02

    Rose Marks open-air pavilion

Best timeMidday works; late afternoon is better

ARC lists the Rose Marks open-air pavilion among the campus additions of the 1980s. It makes a good meeting point for the family frames at the end of a session, and a fallback when the sun is too strong for open lawn. Keep the group tight and away from foot traffic between classes.

  3. 03

    The library

    Best timeWeekday morning

ARC built a three-story library in the 1970s and later expanded it. The entrance is the classic diploma-cover frame: building behind you, regalia front and center. Stand off to one side of the doors so students can get in and out, and keep this stop short during finals.

  4. 04

    Diane Bryant STEM Innovation Center

Best timeMorning, or whenever the facade is fully shaded

The three-story, 57,000-square-foot STEM center opened in fall 2021 and replaced the college's 1960s liberal arts buildings. Its clean, modern lines suit graduates who want a contemporary look, and it is the obvious pick if you spent your ARC years in the science, engineering, or math labs inside.

  5. 05

    Davies Hall

    Best timeLate afternoon

Davies Hall, a three-story classroom and faculty office building finished in 1966, was the first building ARC added after joining the Los Rios district. If you want one frame with some campus history behind it, this is the one to ask for.

  6. 06

    Beaver Stadium, from outside

Best timeEarly evening on a weekday with no event

ARC holds commencement in Beaver Stadium, so a frame at the stadium is a preview of the night you walk. Stick to the outside unless you have permission to go in; the field and stands follow the athletics schedule. A non-event weekday keeps the area quiet.

  7. 07

    Evangelisti Culinary Arts Center

    Best timeOutside restaurant service hours

The culinary arts center opened in fall 2014 and houses the student-run Oak Café restaurant and Oak Café Bakery. Culinary graduates get a frame here that no other program has, and chef whites make a strong second outfit. Shoot at the entrance when service is not running.

  8. 08

    Your HomeBase building

Best timeWhenever its entrance is in shade

ARC groups programs into HomeBases (Art; Health & Education; Public Safety; STEM; Business; Language & Communication; Manufacturing, Construction & Transportation; and People, Culture, & Society), and the college uses them to assign commencement nights. A photo in front of the building where you took most of your classes ties the gallery to your program. Arts graduates can add the James Kaneko Gallery or the main theatre.

Pro Tip

A 45 to 60 minute session covers three or four of these spots comfortably. Start under the oaks while the light is soft, then move to the library and your HomeBase building. Campus facts in this list come from ARC's history page and ARC's facilities page.

Access

Do you need a permit for photos at ARC?

American River College doesn't publish a permit process for portrait sessions; check with the college before your session. The college catalog has a photo and video policy, but it covers the college photographing students for its own publicity. Los Rios Police say event organizers arrange group parking through each college's facility use agreement process, which is written for events.

A paid session may still fall under college rules, so get the current answer from ARC rather than from a blog post, including this one. These habits keep any session on good terms with campus:

  • Keep walkways and doorways clear, especially at the library between classes.
  • Shoot building exteriors; indoor spaces need separate permission.
  • Stay off the stadium field and other athletic areas unless the college says otherwise.
  • Skip confetti, smoke bombs, and glitter; someone else has to clean them up.
  • Buy a daily parking permit before you start walking (details below).
Timing

When is ARC commencement?

ARC typically holds commencement in May, at the end of the spring semester. For 2026 the college split it into two evening ceremonies in Beaver Stadium and assigned graduates by HomeBase. Here is what the official ARC graduation ceremony page listed:

American River College 2026 commencement details as published by the college. Check the ceremony page for 2027.
Detail2026
CeremoniesThursday, May 21 and Friday, May 22, 7:00 pm
VenueBeaver Stadium, main ARC campus
Which nightAssigned by HomeBase
Graduate check-in6:00 pm, bottom floor of the parking garage
Guest ticketsNot required in 2026; gates opened at 6:00 pm
ParkingFree on ceremony day; no parking in the garage

With a 7:00 pm start and a 6:00 pm check-in, the golden hour on ceremony night belongs to the ceremony. Plan your portraits for a separate day. In 2026 the bookstore started selling caps, gowns, and tassels on April 20, which leaves a comfortable window between getting your regalia and walking.

Here's the order I recommend:

  1. Two to four weeks before your ceremony, on a weekday: regalia in hand, photos back in time for announcements and parties.
  2. The week after commencement: campus is quieter and you still have the gown.
  3. Avoid finals week, when the library and parking lots are at their busiest.

Sunset in Sacramento is after 8 PM in late May, so an evening session starts around 6:30 or 7. Valley heat can show up early, which makes a morning slot worth considering. On ceremony night itself, ARC says a professional photographer from Grad Images photographs each graduate, and it asks guests not to stand at the railing to take pictures because that blocks the view for others. Plan family photos for your session, or for after the ceremony with flash once it is dark.

Crowds & Parking

Where do you park for ARC photos?

ARC is a big campus, so pick a lot near your first spot and walk from there. According to ARC's parking page and Los Rios Police:

  • Daily permits cost $2 and come from kiosks in the lots. Machines take $1 bills and coins, and some newer ones take cards.
  • Park in a white-lined student space with a daily permit, and display it face-up on the passenger side of the dashboard.
  • Permits don't transferbetween colleges, and daily permits from ARC's off-campus centers are not valid at the main campus.
  • The parking structure is open 5:30 am to 11:00 pm, with no overnight parking.
  • Free 20-minute visitor spaces exist for quick stops, which is not enough for a session.

Parking rules are enforced 24/7, including holidays, so buy the permit even on a weekend. For crowds, Tuesday through Thursday beats Friday evening, and the weeks right before commencement are the busiest for grad photos. Start at your most popular spot and finish somewhere quieter, like your HomeBase building.

Wardrobe

What to wear over regalia

ARC requires a cap, gown, and tassel to walk, sold at the ARC bookstore. Extras are not available at the ceremony, and students facing financial hardship can request help through the college's Gowns for Grads program. Buy early so the gown is ready for your session as well as the stadium.

  • Steam the gown the night before. Packaged gowns crease hard and the folds show on camera.
  • Solid colors underneath.Cream, white, or a soft neutral looks clean at the collar and won't fight your stole.
  • Bring every honor you earned: cords, stoles from clubs or programs, a cultural or first-generation stole, a sash from your team.
  • Bobby pins for the cap, and finish any cap decorating before the session.
  • One casual change for the oaks, plus program clothing if you have it: scrubs, chef whites, a fire academy shirt.
  • Walkable shoes.ARC is spread out; carry the nice pair if it isn't comfortable.

More wardrobe and posing ideas are in my Sacramento senior portraits guide and the campus graduation sessions guide.

Nearby

Add a Carmichael or Sacramento stop

If you want a second look beyond campus buildings, the American River is close by. The best option is Ancil Hoffman Park in Carmichael, which Sacramento County describes as a 396-acre park dotted with old oaks and bordered on two sides by the river. It is open sunrise to sunset, charges a vehicle entry fee, and is home to the Effie Yeaw Nature Center. Oaks on campus and oaks by the river make a gallery that hangs together well.

See my Carmichael graduation photos page and the Carmichael area guide for more. If you would rather finish downtown with the Capitol or Tower Bridge, plan that as its own stop; my Old Sacramento and Capitol photo guide covers those spots. Transferring to Sac State next? Duo & Group

Graduating with a friend?

If you are finishing alongside people you studied with, the Grad Duo + Headshots session is built for that: two graduates, or a graduate and a friend, share one 60-minute session with cap and gown portraits plus polished professional headshots, and receive 40 to 50 edited photos. The headshots are useful right away for transfer applications, scholarships, and job profiles.

For a bigger friend group, tell me the head count ahead of time. I'll pick a spot with room for everyone, such as open ground under the oaks, and save the group frames for the end so solo portraits don't get rushed.
