Sacramento City College Graduation Photos: Campus Spots, Timing & Cost

Where to shoot cap and gown photos at Sac City and in William Land Park next door, the best time of day for each spot, how to plan around May commencement at Hughes Stadium, and what a session costs.

Take Sacramento City College graduation photos under the preserved archways, against the brick and column facades and outside Hughes Stadium, then cross Freeport Boulevard to William Land Park. Shoot on a weekday two to four weeks before May commencement, in the morning or the last hour before sunset. Sessions start at $500+; see the graduation photo cost guide.

I'm a Sacramento graduation photographer working in natural light, on location. SCC is the oldest institution of higher learning in Sacramento, founded in 1916 as a department of Sacramento High School, and its Land Park campus looks the part. If you are finishing at another Los Rios college, see my guides to American River College, Cosumnes River College, and Folsom Lake College.

The Spots

Where should you take SCC graduation photos?

  1. 01

    The archways

Best timeLate afternoon, when the arches hold open shade

SCC says it has preserved well-recognized architectural features like archways, columns, and brick through its renovations, to keep the campus's collegiate look. An archway is the strongest frame on campus: it puts a natural border around you and keeps the light soft. Stand a few steps back inside the shade and let the brighter campus behind you fall off.

  2. 02

    Brick and column facades

Best timeMorning, or whenever the wall is in even shade

The same preserved brick and columns make a classic, warm backdrop for full-length regalia shots. SCC notes that some of its facilities date from the 1930s and 1950s, which is part of why the campus has such a traditional look. Look for a wall that is evenly lit; half sun and half shade on brick is hard to fix later.

  3. 03

    Hughes Stadium, from outside

Best timeEarly evening on a weekday with no event

Hughes Stadium opened in 1928 as Sacramento Stadium, and SCC lists its capacity at 25,000. It is also where SCC holds commencement. A frame outside the stadium is a preview of the night you walk. Stick to the exterior unless the college gives you access, and pick a day with nothing scheduled.

  4. 04

The corner of Freeport and Sutterville

Best timeEarly morning, before traffic builds

SCC opened at the corner of Sutterville and Freeport in 1926 and has been there since. A frame along the Freeport Boulevard side, with campus buildings behind you, says exactly where you graduated. Stand well back from the road and keep this one quick.

  5. 05

    Performing Arts Center

Best timeDaytime on a non-performance day

The Performing Arts Center holds the main auditorium, a recording studio, a small auditorium, and theater-style classrooms. Theatre, music, and recording arts graduates should put the entrance on their list.

  6. 06

    Kondos Gallery

Best timeWhenever the entrance is in shade

The Gregory Kondos Gallery has been part of SCC's art department for more than half a century. Art graduates can take a frame at the gallery that marks where they showed their work. Shoot from outside unless you have permission to go in.

  7. 07

    Your program's building

Best timeWhenever its entrance is in shade

SCC has been renovating older buildings over the last two decades, so the building you studied in might be brand new or nearly a century old. Either way, a frame in front of it ties the gallery to your program. Bring program gear if you have it: scrubs, a lab coat, or aeronautics program wear.

Pro Tip

Do two or three campus spots in regalia, then cross Freeport to Land Park for the casual change. That fits a 45 to 60 minute session with time to spare. Campus facts in this list come from SCC's facilities page and SCC's history page.

Next Door

William Land Park, across Freeport

SCC's own parking page describes the campus as directly across from William Land Park, which turns a campus session into two very different looks without driving anywhere. The city's park page lists 207 developed acres with lakes, a rock garden, an amphitheater, a jogging path, and off-street parking.

  • WPA Rock Garden. Works Progress Administration crews built the paths and low granite walls of this one-acre garden in 1940, and California native shrubs and trees anchor many of its beds, according to Pacific Horticulture. It is the most textured spot in the park. Stay on the paths and out of the beds.
  • The lakes. Water, reflections, and big trees for a softer, natural frame. Best in the last hour before sunset.
  • William A. Carroll Amphitheater. The city lists a renovation project for it, so check whether it is open before you plan around it.

The Sacramento Zoo and Fairytale Town are inside the park but are separate attractions, so leave them out of the plan. The city publishes a park use application and guide; check whether your session needs one. For more off-campus ideas, McKinley Park's rose garden is a short drive away; see my McKinley Rose Garden photo guide.

Access

Do you need a permit for photos at SCC?

Sacramento City College doesn't publish a permit process for portrait sessions; check with the college before your session. SCC rents facilities to outside organizations through its reservation process, and its catalog has a photo and video policy that covers the college photographing students for its own publicity. Neither speaks directly to a graduate and a photographer.

Whatever the answer, keep the session low-impact:

  • Keep archways and doorways clear; they are walkways first.
  • Shoot building exteriors; indoor spaces need separate permission.
  • Stay off the stadium field unless the college says otherwise.
  • Stand back from Freeport Boulevard for street-side frames.
  • Skip confetti, smoke bombs, and glitter, on campus and in the park.
Timing

When is SCC commencement?

SCC typically holds commencement in May. In 2026 it was an outdoor evening ceremony at Hughes Stadium. This is what the official SCC graduation ceremony page listed:

Sacramento City College 2026 commencement details as published by the college. Check the ceremony page for 2027.
Detail2026
CeremonyThursday, May 21, 7:00 pm, outdoors
VenueSCC Hughes Stadium, 3835 Freeport Boulevard
Who walksSummer and Fall 2025 graduates and Spring 2026 candidates
RSVPEmail with an RSVP link in early to mid April
Day-of salesNone of any kind; extra caps, gowns, and tassels not available

A 7:00 pm ceremony takes the best light of the day, so plan your portraits for a separate day. Summer and fall graduates walk in the May ceremony too, which means a fall graduate can shoot campus and Land Park in autumn color and still have photos ready well before May.

Here's the order I recommend:

  1. Two to four weeks before your ceremony, on a weekday: regalia in hand and photos back in time for announcements.
  2. The week after commencement: quieter, and you still have the gown.
  3. Avoid finals week, when campus parking is tightest.

Sunset in Sacramento is after 8 PM in late May, so an evening session starts around 6:30 or 7. Land Park's tree cover helps on hot days, and a morning slot is worth considering when valley heat shows up early. For booking windows and what goes into the price, see my graduation photo cost guide for Sacramento.

Crowds & Parking

Where do you park for SCC photos?

From SCC's parking page and Los Rios Police:

  • Daily permits cost $2 from kiosks in the lots. Machines take $1 bills and coins; some newer ones take cards.
  • Use a white-lined student space and display the permit face-up on the passenger side of the dashboard.
  • Structure hours are short on weekends. SCC lists 6:00 am to 11:00 pm Monday through Friday and 6:00 am to 9:00 am on Saturday and Sunday, with no overnight parking.
  • Daily permits from the Davis or West Sacramento centers are not valid at the main campus.
  • Rules are enforced 24/7, including holidays.

If you are adding Land Park, the city lists off-street parking in the park; read the posted signs. Weekends bring families to the zoo, Fairytale Town, and the picnic areas, so a weekday evening is the calmest time for both campus and park.

Wardrobe

What to wear over regalia

SCC requires a cap and gown to walk, sold through the SCC Bookstore. There are no sales of any kind on ceremony day, and extra caps, gowns, and tassels are not available at the ceremony, so buy early. You may decorate your cap, but SCC says the gown should not be decorated.

  • Finish the cap first so your portraits match ceremony night.
  • Steam the gown the night before. Packaged gowns crease hard and the folds show.
  • Warm neutrals underneath.Cream, white, or camel sit well against brick and the park's greens.
  • Bring your honors: cords, program stoles, cultural or first-generation stoles, a team sash.
  • One casual change for the rock garden or the lakes.
  • Shoes for granite paths. The rock garden has dirt paths and low stone walls.

More wardrobe and posing ideas are in my Sacramento senior portraits guide and the campus graduation sessions guide.

Nearby

Add a downtown stop

SCC is a short drive from downtown, so a Capitol or Tower Bridge frame is easy to add as its own stop. My Old Sacramento and Capitol photo guide and best Sacramento photo locations cover the options. For local details, see the Sacramento area page.

Duo & Group

Graduating with a friend?

Two graduates can share the Grad Duo + Headshots session: one 60-minute session with cap and gown portraits plus professional headshots for both of you, and 40 to 50 edited photos. Brick and archways make clean headshot backgrounds, so this campus suits the combination well.

For a bigger group, tell me the head count ahead of time. Land Park has the most room for a crowd, and I save group frames for the end so solo portraits aren't rushed.
