William Jessup & Sierra College Graduation Photos in Rocklin: Best Spots & Timing

The campus spots worth your session time at Jessup University and Sierra College, the Rocklin parks that work for cap-and-gown portraits, and how to plan around spring commencement.

Natural-light cap-and-gown portraits, planned around the best light for each location.

Graduation sessions in Rocklin start at $500+, run 45 to 60 minutes, and include 40 to 60 edited photos delivered in about 2 weeks. At Jessup University, the backdrop is the Frank Gehry-designed former Herman Miller campus. At Sierra College, it is the outdoor museum exhibits around Sewell Hall and the oak woodland of the campus Nature Trail. Quarry Park, Johnson-Springview Park and Sunset Whitney cover everything off campus. Shoot in the last 90 minutes before sunset or on a weekday morning.

I'm Angie, a natural-light photographer covering graduation photos in Rocklin and the wider Sacramento region. Jessup University (still searched as William Jessup University) and Sierra College sit a short drive apart in Rocklin, and their grads often want the same thing: a few frames that say “this is my school” plus portraits that look good on a wall. This guide covers both campuses, the nearby city parks, and the timing. For general Rocklin backdrops beyond graduation, see my Rocklin photo locations guide.

Campus 1

Jessup University graduation photos

Jessup's Rocklin campus is not a brick-and-ivy campus, and that is its advantage. According to the university, the 125-acre property was an award-winning office and warehouse facility for the Herman Miller Corporation, initially designed by Frank Gehry, and later renovated by architect Russ Taylor. Jessup describes the result as bright colors, a modern archetype and a strong linear emphasis (jessup.edu). For a graduate, that means clean geometry behind a dark gown instead of the same columns everyone else has.

Where I'd start, in order:

  1. The Gehry-era building exteriors. Long walls and strong lines make simple full-length frames look editorial. Best light: golden hour or an overcast day, since bright metal and pale walls bounce hard midday sun straight back at the camera.
  2. The original courtyard layout. The Herman Miller plan clustered offices, a showroom and employee amenities around an open courtyard (Dreyfuss + Blackford). Courtyard walls give open shade, which makes this the best option when your only free window is midday. Confirm which outdoor areas are open to visitors.
  3. The terrace. Jessup's 2025 commencement program invites guests to “join us on the terrace to congratulate our graduates.” That makes it the natural place for family groups and cap-toss frames. Best light: late afternoon, once the sun is lower than the rooflines.
  4. The Chapel & Events Warehouse exterior. Jessup lists this building as the venue for its December commencement ceremonies (jessup.edu commencement). A frame outside the building where you actually walked is worth five minutes of the session. Best light: weekday morning, before events traffic.

Access: Jessup is a private university. I could not find a published photography policy, so email the university before you lock in a meeting point, and keep entrances and walkways clear.

Campus 2

Sierra College graduation photos

Sierra College's Rocklin campus sits in the Sierra Nevada foothills of South Placer County, and its best graduation backdrops are outdoors. The Natural History Museum is housed in Sewell Hall, the science building (sierracollege.edu), and a campus Nature Trail starts nearby. Between the two, you get granite, gardens and oak woodland within a short walk.

Where I'd start, in order:

  1. The outdoor exhibits around Sewell Hall. Outside the museum you'll find mining exhibits and a Rock Walk, a nod to the region's gold and granite history. Textured stone photographs well next to a smooth gown. Best light: weekday morning, when the area is quiet and the light is soft.
  2. The desert gardens. Also part of the museum's outdoor displays, the gardens add structured plants and color without visual clutter. Best light: open shade in the morning or the last hour before sunset. Midday sun is harsh here.
  3. The Nature Trail woodland. The trail sits in the Sierra College Nature Area and Outdoor Classroom, and the Biological Sciences department describes it as foothill woodland, streamside, vernal pool and chaparral habitat, about a mile long (Sierra College Biological Sciences). The trailhead is reached by walking between the dorms and the science building toward the creek. Best light: golden hour, when sun filters through the canopy.
  4. The creek-side section. The trail drops toward the creek, which gives you a green, layered background that reads more “foothills” than “campus.” It is a good place for the relaxed, outfit-change half of a session. Wear shoes you can walk in and change at the end.

Access: The department page notes there is no formal procedure for walking the trail beyond obeying parking regulations. That is about access, not paid portrait sessions, so confirm photography with Sierra College before you book, and stay on the trail around the vernal pools.

Off Campus

Nearby Rocklin spots for cap and gown

If campus access is limited, or you want a second look, these city locations are a short drive from both schools:

  1. Quarry Park. The city's downtown gathering space is a former granite quarry, and the last of Rocklin's 62 quarries to stop operating, in 2005 (rocklin.ca.us). Granite walls make the most dramatic grad backdrop in town. Quarry Park Adventures and the amphitheater share the site, so work the public areas. Best light: late afternoon.
  2. The Quarry Loop Trail. The trail links Quarry Park with Ruhkala Road through the Quarry District, which is useful for walking frames and a quieter second spot without moving the car.
  3. Johnson-Springview Park. At the northern edge of the Quarry District, this large city park has open lawns and trees for classic, uncluttered portraits and family groups. It also has sports fields, a skate park and a splash pad, so pick a corner away from them. Best light: golden hour.
  4. Sunset Whitney Recreation Area. The former Sunset Whitney golf course closed in 2015, and the city bought it in 2017. The West Trails off Midas Avenue add 2.7 miles of paths, and two of the historic Twelve Bridges built by the Whitney family are on the property (rocklin.ca.us). Wide open sky makes it the best sunset location in Rocklin. The park is still being developed, so check for construction areas.

The City of Rocklin issues photography and filming permits for commercial photography on city property, so ask the City Manager's Office whether your session needs one. Light, parking and seasonal notes for each park are in the full guide to Rocklin photo spots.

Seniors

Rocklin High and Whitney High seniors

Seniors from local high schools, including Rocklin High and Whitney High, often use the same city spots: the Quarry Park granite for an editorial look, Johnson-Springview for something classic, and Sunset Whitney when they want golden sunset light and room to move. High school campuses have their own rules, so this guide sticks to public locations.

Fall sessions catch yearbook deadlines and warm leaves; spring sessions are for the cap and gown. Book senior portraits in Rocklin the same way as a college session, and see the Sacramento senior portraits guide for outfit and timing ideas. Families in Roseville can use the Roseville graduation photos page.

Timing

How to time around commencement

The two schools graduate at different points in spring, so Rocklin grad season runs from late April through early June.

  • Jessup University: spring ceremonies have been held in early May (the 2025 graduate and undergraduate ceremonies were on the first weekend of May), and Jessup also holds December commencement ceremonies for fall graduates.
  • Sierra College: the Rocklin ceremony has been held on a Friday evening in late May. Check the Sierra College commencement page for your year.

The order I recommend:

  1. Two to three weeks before your ceremony, on a weekday. You have your regalia, the campus is calm, and you still have time to use the photos on announcements.
  2. The week after. The rush is over and you still have the gown.
  3. Avoid ceremony day itself for a portrait session. Campus is full, parking is tight, and you will be short on time.

Within the day, the last 90 minutes before sunset and weekday mornings both win. A 45 to 60 minute session usually fits two or three nearby spots on one campus, or one campus spot plus one park. To understand what shapes the price, read the graduation photo cost guide.

Wardrobe

What to bring for Rocklin grad photos

  • A steamed gown. Synthetic regalia creases, and the folds show on camera.
  • Solid colors underneath. Patterns and logos peek out at the collar.
  • Walkable shoes plus photo shoes. The Nature Trail and Quarry Loop are real trails.
  • One casual outfit. Most grads want regalia frames plus relaxed portraits in their own clothes.
  • Bobby pins and water. Late-spring afternoons in the foothills are warm and breezy.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much do graduation photos cost in Rocklin?

Graduation and senior sessions with Captured By Angie start at $500+. A session runs 45 to 60 minutes and includes 40 to 60 edited photos, delivered in a private online gallery in about 2 weeks. Rocklin is inside the standard Sacramento-region coverage area. Two graduates sharing a session, or a Grad Duo + Headshots request, is quoted individually.

Where should I take graduation photos at Jessup University?

The Rocklin campus is the former Herman Miller facility, originally designed by Frank Gehry, so the architecture is the backdrop: angular metal-clad buildings with strong linear lines, the terrace where families gather after commencement, and the exterior of the Chapel & Events Warehouse. Confirm with Jessup that portrait sessions are allowed in the areas you want before you book a meeting point.

Where should I take graduation photos at Sierra College?

On the Rocklin campus, the strongest options are the outdoor exhibits around Sewell Hall, home of the Natural History Museum (mining exhibits, the Rock Walk and desert gardens), and the Nature Trail in the Sierra College Nature Area, which runs through foothill woodland toward the creek. Confirm current access and photography rules with Sierra College before your session.

Do I need permission to take graduation photos on campus in Rocklin?

Check with the school. Neither Jessup University nor Sierra College publishes a portrait-session policy that I could confirm, and open outdoor access does not guarantee permission for a paid session, indoor spaces, or props. The City of Rocklin issues photography and filming permits for commercial photography on city property, so ask the city as well if your plan includes Quarry Park or another city park.

When is commencement at Jessup University and Sierra College?

In recent years, Jessup has held its spring ceremonies in early May on the Rocklin campus, and it also holds December commencement ceremonies. Sierra College has held its Rocklin commencement on a Friday evening in late May. Check each school's official commencement page for your year's date, then book photos for the weeks before or after.

Can Rocklin High and Whitney High seniors use these spots?

Yes. High school seniors from Rocklin often use the same city locations for senior portraits: the Quarry Park area, Johnson-Springview Park and Sunset Whitney Recreation Area. Senior portraits follow the same session format, 45 to 60 minutes starting at $500+, and can be timed for fall yearbook deadlines or spring cap-and-gown frames.

Can two graduates share one session?

Yes. A shared session can include solo portraits for each graduate plus frames together. Grad Duo + Headshots is a custom quote: send both graduates' priorities, the campus or park you want, your preferred date and any delivery deadline, and the scope and price will be confirmed before booking.
