Folsom Lake College Graduation Photos: Campus Spots, Timing & Cost

Where to shoot cap and gown photos at FLC and its El Dorado and Rancho Cordova centers, the best time of day for each spot, how to plan around May commencement, and what a session costs.

A natural-light graduation portrait in the foothills.

Take Folsom Lake College graduation photos at the #Falcontude falcon wings outside the Falcon's Roost, the Quad and the Harris Center, where commencement is typically held in May. Shoot on a weekday two to four weeks before, in the morning or the last hour before sunset. Sessions start at $500+; see the graduation photo cost guide.

I'm a natural-light photographer who books Folsom graduation photos on location. FLC's main campus is at 10 College Parkway in Folsom, and the college also runs the El Dorado Center in Placerville and the Rancho Cordova Center, so this guide covers all three. If you are finishing at another Los Rios college, see my guides to American River College, Cosumnes River College, and Sacramento City College.

The Spots

Where should you take FLC graduation photos?

  1. 01

The #Falcontude wings outside the Falcon's Roost

Best timeWeekday morning, before the Roost gets busy

In fall 2023 FLC installed #Falcontude, a public art piece of colorful 3D falcon wings, outside the Falcon's Roost. It was designed and made by an FLC art professor with the art club, the Artists Guild, and clay sculpture students. Stand centered in front of the wings and you have the most FLC-specific frame on campus. The Falcon's Roost is the hub of student life, so go early or late in the day.

  2. 02

    The Quad

Best timeThe last hour before sunset

The Quad is one of the main campus spaces FLC features on its facilities page. It gives you room for the classic full-length regalia frame, and it is the easiest place on campus to fit a family group. Save it for the end of the day when the light is low and warm.

  3. 03

    Aspen Hall

Best timeMorning, or whenever the entrance is in shade

Aspen Hall opened in 2001 as the first permanent building on the Folsom campus, after years of classes in portables. FLC features both its front and rear entries in its campus photos. It is a good frame for graduates who want the building that started the college behind them.

  4. 04

    Cypress Hall

    Best timeLate afternoon

FLC's facilities photos show Cypress Hall's interior rotunda. Indoor frames need permission, so plan on the exterior and the entrance. Science graduates have a reason to choose it: the building holds biology classrooms.

  5. 05

    Harris Center for the Arts

Best timeDaytime on a non-show day

The Harris Center opened in 2010 as the college's visual and performing arts center, with an 800-seat main theater, a studio theater, and a recital hall. It is also where FLC holds commencement. A frame outside the building ties your photos to the stage you crossed. Check the show calendar first; performance nights bring crowds and full lots.

  6. 06

Interpretive trail through the wetland preserve

Best timeThe last hour before sunset

When FLC opened its athletics complex in 2012, it included a cross-country course and an interpretive trail through the campus wetland preserve. That gives you a natural, open setting without leaving campus, and it is the right place for a casual outfit. Stay on the trail. The college's own history jokes that the early Folsom Lake Center was known for its rattlesnakes, so watch your footing and keep out of tall grass.

  7. 07

    Gymnasium entrance

    Best timeMorning

FLC's gymnasium is shaped like a falcon in flight when you see it from the air, according to the college's facilities photos. From the ground, the signage and entrance make a strong frame for student-athletes, especially with a team jersey as the second outfit.

  8. 08

    Your program's building

Best timeWhenever its entrance is in shade

The Innovation Center Makerspace, the science labs, the library and computer lab, the Welcome and Student Success Center: each means something to a different graduate. One frame in front of the place where you spent the most time ties the gallery to your program.

Pro Tip

Three or four spots fit a 45 to 60 minute session. The falcon wings and the Quad are close together for regalia, and the wetland trail is the place for the casual change at the end. Campus facts in this list come from FLC's history page and FLC's facilities page.

The Centers

El Dorado Center and Rancho Cordova Center

If you took most of your classes at one of the college's centers, your photos can start there.

El Dorado Center, Placerville. The center is at 6699 Campus Drive, off Green Valley Road, and serves students on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada. FLC features the Building B courtyard and entry in its photos, and the center is home to the Community Observatory and the Sherwood Demonstration Garden. Pair it with Placerville graduation photos on historic Main Street, where the Bell Tower and Gold Rush era storefronts give you a backdrop you won't find in the valley.

Rancho Cordova Center. The center moved into its first permanent building in October 2015 at 10259 Folsom Boulevard, at Mather Field Road and Paseo Drive, across from the Mather Field/Mills light rail station. In 2026 the college opened a Healthcare Hub there, so allied health graduates have a fresh reason to take one frame at the entrance. The site is compact, so I suggest adding a stop nearby or at the main campus; see Rancho Cordova graduation photos for options. Parking permits are required at all times there.

Access

Do you need a permit for photos at FLC?

Folsom Lake College doesn't publish a permit process for portrait sessions; check with the college before your session. Los Rios Police say event organizers arrange group parking through each college's facility use agreement process, which is built for events. FLC's commencement RSVP form also includes a release letting the district use photos and video from the ceremony in its publications.

For a portrait session, keep it low-impact:

  • Stay on the trail in the wetland preserve.
  • Keep the Falcon's Roost entrance clear; it is a busy doorway.
  • Shoot exteriors; the Cypress Hall rotunda and Harris Center lobby need permission.
  • Don't climb on the art. Stand in front of the #Falcontude wings, not on them.
  • Skip confetti, smoke bombs, and glitter.
Timing

When is FLC commencement?

FLC typically holds commencement in May, at the end of the spring semester. In 2026 it split graduates into two indoor ceremonies at the Harris Center by last name. The details below come from FLC's ceremony RSVP pages for Ceremony One and Ceremony Two:

Folsom Lake College 2026 commencement details as published by the college. Check FLC's graduation pages for 2027.
DetailCeremony OneCeremony Two

Time3:00 pm6:30 pm
GraduatesLast names A to JLast names K to Z
VenueHarris Center for the Arts, main Folsom campus
RSVP deadlineSunday, May 3, 11:59 pm

The split schedule gives the afternoon group an option the evening group doesn't have. Sunset in Sacramento is after 8 PM in late May, so if you walk at 3:00, you can step out of the Harris Center and into a golden hour session on campus with family still there. If you walk at 6:30, book a separate day; late-afternoon light before the ceremony is harsh, and you will be getting ready.

Here's the order I recommend:

  1. Two to four weeks before, on a weekday: the calmest campus and photos back in time for announcements.
  2. Ceremony evening, for the 3:00 group: golden hour right after you walk.
  3. The week after commencement: quieter, and you still have the gown.

Valley heat can show up early in May, so a morning slot is worth considering. For booking windows and what goes into the price, see my graduation photo cost guide for Sacramento.

Crowds & Parking

Where do you park for FLC photos?

From FLC's main campus parking page and Los Rios Police:

  • Daily permits cost $2 from machines in the main campus lots. Machines take $1 bills and coins; some newer ones take cards.
  • Free 20-minute visitor spaces cover quick stops; a session needs a daily permit.
  • Center permits don't work at the main campus. Daily permits from the El Dorado or Rancho Cordova centers are not valid in main campus lots.
  • Use a white-lined student space and display the permit face-up on the passenger side of the dashboard.
  • Rules are enforced 24/7, including holidays.

On campus, the Falcon's Roost is the busiest stop, so shoot the wings early. Harris Center show nights fill the lots near the theater; check the performance calendar before you pick an evening. Tuesday through Thursday is calmer than Friday.

Wardrobe

What to wear over regalia

Check FLC's graduation pages for where to get your cap and gown, and order early so it arrives before your session date. Under the gown, keep it simple so the regalia stays the focus.

  • Steam the gown the night before. Packaged gowns crease hard and the folds show.
  • Solid colors underneath. The #Falcontude wings are colorful, so a neutral outfit lets them carry the frame.
  • Bring your honors: cords, program stoles, cultural or first-generation stoles, a team sash.
  • Closed-toe shoes for the trail. Carry the dress shoes for the regalia frames.
  • One casual change for the wetland trail or a Lake Natoma stop.
  • Water and bobby pins. May afternoons in Folsom can be hot, and caps slip.

More wardrobe and posing ideas are in my Sacramento senior portraits guide and the campus graduation sessions guide.

Nearby

Add a Folsom stop

Folsom packs a lot of variety into a short drive. Historic Sutter Street, the heart of the Folsom Historic District since the 1850s, has brick storefronts for a polished casual look. The Rainbow Bridge crosses the American River nearby, and Lake Natoma, the river-fed reservoir below Folsom Dam, gives you water and trail frames along the Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail. Graduates who want granite and oaks in their gallery have plenty of foothill options too.

My Folsom and El Dorado Hills photo locations guide covers each spot with access notes, and the Folsom area page has local details. Transferring to Sac State or UC Davis next? I have guides for Sac State and UC Davis, and Placer County grads can see my Jessup and Sierra College guide.

Duo & Group

Graduating with a friend?

Two graduates can share the Grad Duo + Headshots session: one 60-minute session with cap and gown portraits plus professional headshots for both of you, and 40 to 50 edited photos. With the two ceremonies split by last name, friends may walk at different times; a shared session puts you in the same photos anyway.

For a bigger group, tell me the head count ahead of time. The Quad has the most room, and I save group frames for the end so solo portraits aren't rushed.

I graduated from the El Dorado Center or Rancho Cordova Center. Can we shoot there?

Yes. The El Dorado Center on Campus Drive in Placerville has the Building B courtyard and the Sherwood Demonstration Garden, and it pairs well with Placerville's historic Main Street. The Rancho Cordova Center on Folsom Boulevard is a modern building. The site is compact, so plan one frame there and the rest at the Folsom campus or Lake Natoma.
