Sac State Graduation Photos: Best Campus Spots, Timing & Cost
Where to shoot cap and gown photos at Sacramento State, the best time of day for each spot, how to plan around spring and winter commencement, and what a session costs.

A natural-light graduation portrait session in Sacramento.
Sac State graduation photo sessions with Angie start at $500+ for 45 to 60 minutes, with 40 to 60 edited photos delivered in about two weeks. The best CSUS spots are the Guy West Bridge, the river trail below it, the Library Quad, the University Arboretum, and Founders Rose Garden. Shoot on a weekday, either in the morning or in the last hour before sunset, two to four weeks before your ceremony.
I'm a Sacramento graduation photographer working in natural light, on location. This guide covers the Sacramento State campus specifically: where to stand, when the light is right, what the university says about photography, and how to time your session around commencement. 9 Sac State campus spots and the best time for each
- 01
Guy West Bridge
Best timeGolden hour, or a weekday morning
The orange suspension bridge over the American River is the most recognizable Sac State backdrop. Sac State describes it as a mid-1960s bike and pedestrian bridge modeled on the Golden Gate Bridge and named for the university's founding president. Shoot from the campus end for the full sweep of cables, then walk onto the deck for tighter frames. It is a working commuter route, so keep the path clear for cyclists.
- 02
The river trail beside the bridge
Best timeThe last hour before sunset
Below the bridge, the trail along the American River gives you dry grass, oaks, and water without leaving campus. This stretch connects to the American River Parkway (the Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail), and Sac State's Alumni Grove sits alongside the river nearby. It is the softest, most natural-looking spot on this list and a good place for the casual outfit change.
- 03
University Library and the Library Quad
Best timeWeekday morning
The Library Quad is one of the most used grad photo spots on campus, according to the student newspaper, The State Hornet. You get open lawn, big trees, and the library facade in one place, which makes it the classic diploma frame. There is also a mural near the Library Quad if you want color behind the gown.
- 04
University Arboretum
Best timeMidday is fine here; golden hour is better
Sac State's arboretum is a botanical garden near the J Street entrance, founded in 1959 and run through the Department of Biological Sciences. The tree cover holds open shade longer than the quads, so this is the fallback when your only free window is the middle of the day. The State Hornet also lists the Arboretum tunnel near the north entrance as a popular spot.
- 05
Founders Rose Garden
Best timeMorning, especially in spring bloom
The rose garden was planted in memory of Stephen Walker, one of Sac State's founding administrators. Roses are at their best in spring, which lines up well with May graduation. Stay on the paths and out of the beds; shoot from the edges and use the blooms as foreground.
- 06
Sacramento State sign at J Street and Carlson Drive
Best timeEarly morning, before traffic builds
The campus sign at the north entrance on Carlson Drive at J Street is the frame that says exactly where you graduated. There is a second sign at the south entrance. Stand well back from the road, keep the group small, and get this one done quickly.
- 07
Lassen Hall murals
Best timeAny time the wall is in even shade
Lassen Hall has murals from two eras: a 1968 piece by Edward Rivera and a 2019 Wide Open Walls mural by Jillian Evelyn. Painted walls add color and personality, and they pair well with a bright stole or cords. Check that the wall is evenly lit; half sun and half shade on a mural is hard to fix later.
- 08
University Union and Shasta Hall murals
Best timeWeekday morning or late afternoon
The State Hornet names the murals by the University Union and Shasta Hall among the photo-worthy walls on campus. The Union is the busiest building on this list during the term, so plan these frames outside the lunch rush.
- 09
Your own college's building
Best timeWhenever its entrance is in shade
Plenty of graduates want one frame in front of the building where they actually spent four years: the engineering building, the nursing school, the business college. These photos often end up meaning the most to parents. The State Hornet also mentions the covered hallway between Alpine and Brighton Halls, which gives even light and clean lines.
Don't try to hit all nine. A 45 to 60 minute session comfortably covers three or four spots. The bridge and the river trail are a natural pair; the Library Quad and the rose garden make a good second pair. Campus photo rules and permits
Here is what I could verify, and what I couldn't. Sac State does not publish a simple “grad photo permit” page that I could find. University policy documents describe rules for filming and photography on university property, with Student Affairs overseeing student productions and University Communications overseeing outside and commercial productions. The stated goals are minimizing disruption and keeping campus safe.
A paid portrait session may fall under those rules, so confirm current requirements with the university before your date. Don't rely on a blog post, including this one. For the arboretum, the university lists a contact at arboretum@csus.edu.
A few habits keep any session on good terms with campus:
- Keep paths clear, especially on the Guy West Bridge, which is a busy bike and pedestrian route.
- Stay out of planting beds in the arboretum and the rose garden.
- Skip confetti, smoke bombs, and glitter; they leave a mess on someone else's campus.
- Shoot building exteriors; indoor spaces need separate permission.
- Check visitor parking before you arrive and build walking time into your plan.
Timing around spring and winter commencement
Sac State holds two commencement seasons: spring in May and winter in December. Recent ceremonies have been held downtown at Golden 1 Center rather than on campus. The university lists Winter Commencement 2026 for Saturday, December 19, 2026 at Golden 1 Center. Spring dates are posted on the official Sac State commencement page; check there before you book anything.
Because the ceremony itself is downtown, campus photos are usually a separate trip. That works in your favor: you can shoot campus on a calm weekday and keep ceremony day for family.
Here's the order I recommend:
- Two to four weeks before your ceremony, on a weekday: your regalia has arrived and photos are back in time for announcements.
- The week after commencement: the rush is over and you still have the gown.
- Avoid finals week and move-out days, when campus is crowded and everyone is stressed.
Spring (May): Sunset in Sacramento is after 8 PM in late May, so an evening session starts around 6:30 or 7. Valley heat can arrive early, which makes the morning slot worth considering.
Winter (December): Sunset is around 4:50 PM in mid-December, so golden hour starts in mid-afternoon. Light is low and soft all day, the trees along the river are bare, and tule fog can roll in. Bring a coat to wear between frames and have a rain-date plan.

How to get Sac State without the crowds
The weeks before commencement are grad photo season, and every graduate wants the same three or four frames. The bridge, the Library Quad, and the campus sign are where you'll find other photographers on weekend evenings.
- Go on a weekday. Tuesday through Thursday is calmer than Friday evening or the weekend.
- Start with the busiest spot. Do the bridge or the sign first, then move to quieter places like the river trail or the murals.
- Use the river trail as your buffer. If the bridge is crowded, the trail below it gives you the bridge in the background without people in the foreground.
- Avoid the lunch hour near the University Union during the term.
Outfit and regalia tips
Sac State's official colors are Sac State Green and Sac State Gold, per the university brand color palette. You don't need to dress in school colors, but a touch of green or gold in a stole, cords, or a bouquet ties the photos to the school. Underneath, keep it simple so the regalia stays the focus.
- Steam the gown the night before. Packaged gowns crease hard, and the folds show on camera.
- Solid colors underneath.Cream, white, soft gold, or a neutral that won't clash at the collar.
- Shoes you can walk in.The bridge and river trail mean some walking; bring a second pair if your favorite shoes aren't practical.
- Bobby pins for the cap. River breezes will take it off otherwise.
- Bring one casual change. Regalia at the bridge and Library Quad, then your own clothes on the river trail or by a mural.
- Bring the extras that mean something: your diploma cover, a decorated cap, cultural stoles, or a sash from your club or team.

Frequently asked questions
What are the best spots for Sac State graduation photos?
The most popular Sac State graduation photo spots are the Guy West Bridge, the river trail below it, the University Library and Library Quad, the University Arboretum, Founders Rose Garden, the Sacramento State sign at J Street and Carlson Drive, the Lassen Hall murals, the University Union and Shasta Hall murals, and your own college's building. Pick three or four that fit a 45 to 60 minute session; the bridge and the river trail pair naturally because they sit next to each other.
Do you need a permit for graduation photos at Sacramento State?
I could not find a published permit page for portrait sessions at Sac State. University documents describe policies covering filming and photography on university property, overseen by Student Affairs for student productions and University Communications for outside and commercial productions. Before a paid session, confirm current requirements with the university, and expect to keep paths clear, skip props that block walkways, and stay out of planting beds.
When is Sac State commencement?
Sac State holds spring commencement in May and winter commencement in December. Recent ceremonies have been held downtown at Golden 1 Center, and the university lists Winter Commencement 2026 for Saturday, December 19, 2026 at Golden 1 Center. Check the official commencement page for spring dates, since they are posted closer to the season.
When should I schedule my Sac State grad photos?
Book a weekday session two to four weeks before your ceremony, once your cap and gown arrive. Campus is calmer, you are not competing with ceremony-weekend crowds, and you have the photos in hand for announcements and parties. The week after commencement also works if you still have your regalia. Book four to six weeks ahead for spring dates, which fill first.
What should I wear for Sac State graduation photos?
Wear a simple, solid outfit under your regalia so nothing competes with the gown, and bring one casual change for the river trail or murals. Sac State's official colors are green and gold, so a cream, white, or soft gold top looks good with school-color cords and stoles. Steam the gown the night before and bring bobby pins for the cap.
How much do Sac State graduation photos cost?
Graduation sessions with Angie start at $500+ for 45 to 60 minutes, with 40 to 60 edited photos delivered in about two weeks through a private online gallery. If two graduates want to book together, the Grad Duo + Headshots option is a custom quote based on what each person needs.
Can we include family or friends in Sac State grad photos?
Yes. Most graduates save the last few minutes of the session for frames with parents, siblings, or friends. Tell me the group size ahead of time so I can pick a spot with room for everyone, like the Library Quad lawn. If you want a full session for two graduates, ask for a Grad Duo + Headshots quote.
