Cosumnes River College Graduation Photos: Campus Spots, Timing & Cost
Where to shoot cap and gown photos at CRC, the best time of day for each spot, how to plan around the May morning ceremony, and what a session costs.

Graduates celebrating with a cap toss.
Take Cosumnes River College graduation photos at the quad fountain with the original Library behind it, the Winn Center and the Native Garden Project. Commencement is typically on a May morning, so shoot two to four weeks before or that evening. Sessions start at $500+; see the graduation photo cost guide.
I'm a Sacramento graduation photographer working in natural light, on location. CRC sits at 8401 Center Parkway in south Sacramento, right next to Elk Grove, so this guide also covers the Elk Grove graduation photo spots that pair with a campus session. The college takes its name from the Cosumnes River; its history page explains that “Cosumnes” is a Miwok name meaning “People of the Salmon.” Finishing at another Los Rios college? Where should you take CRC graduation photos?
- 01
The quad fountain and the Library
Best timeWeekday morning, or the last hour before sunset
CRC's history page calls the fountain the centerpiece of the college quad, and it has been there since the campus opened in 1970. The Library behind it was the first permanent building on campus, and the college's own photo tour frames the two together. That makes this the most CRC-specific frame you can get: water in the foreground, the original building behind you. Shoot from the side with the sun behind you or in full shade so the water doesn't throw glare onto your face.
- 02
Winn Center
Best timeMorning, when the facade is evenly lit
The Winn Center opened in 2012 as CRC's first LEED Platinum certified building, and the college says it is the only one in the Los Rios district. It houses Architecture, Photography, Pharmacy Technology, Nutrition and other programs, so graduates from those programs get a frame in front of their own building. It is also where graduates checked in on commencement morning in 2026.
- 03
College Center entryway
Best timeLate afternoon
The College Center houses offices including Business Services, and its entryway appears in CRC's photo tour. The entrance gives you clean architectural lines and room for a family group. The college even photographs it at night; if your session runs past sunset, the lit building makes a good final frame.
- 04
Visual and Performing Arts courtyard
Best timeAny time the courtyard is in even shade
The Communication, Visual and Performing Arts complex opened in 1995 and completed the college's original facilities master plan. Its courtyard, the Art Gallery exterior, and the buildings around the Black Box Theatre and Recital Hall make a calmer, enclosed setting away from the main walkways. Art, music, and theatre graduates should put this on their list.
- 05
Native Garden Project
Best timeThe last hour before sunset
CRC's photo tour notes that the Native Garden Project restored a portion of campus to its natural habitat. Native plantings give you a softer, natural background without leaving campus, and it is the right place for your casual outfit change. Stay on the paths and out of the plantings.
- 06
The greenhouse
Best timeMorning
The greenhouse is home to many of CRC's horticulture classes. Shoot it from outside; the glass and plants behind you make a distinctive frame, and it is the one to choose if you are finishing a horticulture or agriculture program.
- 07
CRC Stadium, from outside
Best timeEarly evening on a weekday with no event
CRC holds commencement outdoors at CRC Stadium on the main campus. A frame at the stadium ties your photos to the morning you walk. Stay outside unless the college gives you access, and pick a day with nothing scheduled.
- 08
Your program's building
Best timeWhenever its entrance is in shade
The Northeast Technical Building, the Learning Resource Center, and the science buildings all mean something to different graduates. A photo in front of the place where you spent the most hours ties the gallery to your program. Bring program gear if you have it: scrubs, a toolbelt, a lab coat.
Three or four spots fit a 45 to 60 minute session. The fountain and the Library pair naturally, and the Native Garden is the right place to switch into a casual outfit. Campus facts in this list come from CRC's history page and the CRC campus photo tour.
Do you need a permit for photos at CRC?
Cosumnes River College doesn't publish a permit process for portrait sessions; check with the college before your session. CRC does publish a facility use permit request form for people renting campus facilities for events, and the Los Rios catalog has a photo and video policy that covers the college photographing students for its own publicity. Neither one speaks directly to a graduate and a photographer walking the quad.
A blog post, this one included, is no substitute for the college's current answer. These habits keep any session on good terms with campus:
- Keep walkways and entrances clear, especially around the College Center between classes.
- Stay on the paths in the Native Garden.
- Shoot building exteriors; indoor spaces and the greenhouse interior need separate permission.
- Stay off the stadium field unless the college says otherwise.
- Skip confetti, smoke bombs, and glitter, and don't put anything in the fountain.
When is CRC commencement?
CRC typically holds commencement in May, at the end of the spring semester. In 2026 it was a single outdoor morning ceremony at CRC Stadium. This is what the official CRC graduation ceremony page listed:
| Detail | 2026 |
|---|---|
| Ceremony | Friday, May 22, 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, outdoors |
| Venue | CRC Stadium, main campus, 8401 Center Parkway |
| Graduate check-in | From 8:00 am in the Winn Center (WIN 150), by 9:00 am |
| Guest gates | Opened at 8:30 am |
| Tickets | One graduate ticket and four guest tickets per graduate; every guest, including children, needs one |
| Parking | Parking structure or Lots D and E via the Calvine Road entrance; Bruceville Road entrance closed |
A morning ceremony changes the math. You can't do campus portraits beforehand without a very early start, and early afternoon light on an open campus in late May is harsh and hot. You do get the evening, though. Sunset in Sacramento is after 8 PM in late May, so a session that starts around 6:30 or 7 on ceremony day catches the best light while the gown is still on and the family is still in town.
Here's the order I recommend:
- Two to four weeks before, on a weekday: the calmest campus and photos back in time for announcements.
- Ceremony evening: golden hour on campus or at Elk Grove Regional Park, with family on hand.
- The week after commencement: quieter, and you still have the gown.
With only four guest tickets per graduate, a session is also a good way to include the relatives who couldn't get a seat in the stadium. For booking windows and pricing detail, see my graduation photo cost guide for Sacramento.
Where do you park for CRC photos?
You can enter CRC from Calvine Road, Center Parkway, or Bruceville Road. Park near your first spot and walk from there. From CRC's parking page and Los Rios Police:
- Daily permits cost $2 from kiosks in the lots. Machines take $1 bills and coins; some newer ones take cards.
- Use a white-lined student space and display the permit face-up on the passenger side of the dashboard.
- The parking structure is open 6:00 am to 11:00 pm during the fall, spring, and summer semesters when class is in session, and closed on holidays.
- Daily permits from the Elk Grove Center and other off-campus centers are not valid at the main campus.
- Rules are enforced 24/7, including holidays.
The quad and the fountain get the most foot traffic during the term, so go there first on a weekday morning or late in the day. Tuesday through Thursday is calmer than Friday, and the two weeks before commencement are peak grad photo season.
What to wear over regalia
CRC requires a CRC cap and gown to walk, available from the CRC Bookstore or online through Jostens. Extra caps, gowns, and tassels are not available at the ceremony, and the Gowns for Grads program offers free caps and gowns in limited numbers. CRC allows decorated caps within the Student Code of Conduct, but the gown itself should not be decorated.
- Finish the cap first. If you decorate it, do it before the session so your portraits match ceremony day.
- Steam the gown the night before. Packaged gowns crease hard and the folds show.
- Solid colors underneath so nothing competes at the collar or under the stole.
- Bring your honors: cords, program stoles, cultural or first-generation stoles, a team sash.
- One casual change for the Native Garden or Elk Grove Regional Park.
- Bobby pins and walkable shoes. Valley breezes move caps, and campus means walking.
More wardrobe and posing ideas are in my Sacramento senior portraits guide and the campus graduation sessions guide.
Add an Elk Grove stop
Elk Grove Regional Park is the easiest second location from campus. According to the Cosumnes CSD park history, the land was sold in 1903 with plans to cut its oaks for lumber, and a young resident named Jennie McConnell sold $5 shares to the community to buy it as a park instead. The large oaks are still there, along with a 7.5-acre lake. It gives you big trees and water in the same session, which a campus can't.
My Elk Grove photo locations guide covers Old Town Elk Grove and more options, and the Elk Grove area page has local details. For bookings, start at Elk Grove graduation photos. If you would rather add a downtown frame, the Capitol and Tower Bridge are covered in my best Sacramento photo locations guide. Heading to Sac State or UC Davis after CRC? I have guides for Sac State and UC Davis too.
Graduating with a friend?
If you and a classmate went through the same program, book the Grad Duo + Headshots session together. It is one 60-minute session for two graduates, or a graduate and a friend, with cap and gown portraits plus professional headshots and 40 to 50 edited photos. Pharmacy technician, nutrition, and architecture grads in particular get headshots they can use for job applications right away.
For a larger group, tell me the head count ahead of time so I can pick a spot with room, like the open area around the quad fountain, and save group frames for the end of the session.

Where do you park for photos at Cosumnes River College?
Buy a $2 daily permit from a kiosk in a student lot and park in a white-lined student space. The CRC parking structure is open 6:00 am to 11:00 pm during the fall, spring, and summer semesters when class is in session, and it is closed on holidays. Los Rios Police enforce parking rules 24/7.

How much do Cosumnes River College graduation photos cost?
Graduation sessions with Angie start at $500+ for 45 to 60 minutes, with 40 to 60 edited photos delivered in about two weeks through a private online gallery. The Grad Duo + Headshots option is a custom quote for a shared 60-minute session with 40 to 50 edited photos.
Can we do CRC grad photos in Elk Grove too?
Yes. Elk Grove Regional Park is a short drive from campus and has the big oak trees residents saved from logging in the early 1900s, plus a lake. A good plan is campus frames in regalia first, then the park in a casual outfit. Plan the drive into your session time.
